In November, Martin travelled to Lakeside, California to give a tech session to the local
club.
The session was held at the home of club member, Gale Hess.
This original chassis came out of Gale's car. Club members were very
surprised at how damaged the frame was. Gale had been driving the car until he decided he needed a JULE chassis a few months
ago. He showed the car at the San Diego
Conclave.
Club members had many questions. There was a lengthy discussion about
scuttle shake and the inconsistent handling of the Healey on the original chassis. While some members felt this added to the
character of the Healey, most members felt very unsafe on the busy freeways and highways of today's world. The JULE chassis
offers the solution.
The original chassis demonstrated to the members how much flex was
present both torsional and longitudinally. It was apparent that the original is not as rigid as claimed. Martin discussed areas for members to look at when they are concerned
about their frames- cracked Engine mounts, cracking around shock tower bolts, rear shock plates cracking, rear buckling
under rear axle area, compression buckling on main frame rails forward of the front foot wells, splitting of the welds along
the rails, crushed front cross member effecting the lower A arms and front end alignment. One or more of these failures will
be found in over 90% of Austin Healeys. Members
asked if webbing in the main rails offered any resolution to these issues. Martin advised the webbing offers some assistance
to the longitual support of the main rail but addressed none of the more crucial issues related to the skuttle shake and the
handling of the car. Skuttle shake is caused by the lack of torsional rigidity. Torsional rigidty is what controls the positioning
of suspension components. This positioning must be constant at all times.

Gale's superstructure returned in his Maroon colour. Jule Enterprises is very grateful to the Hess' for their hospitality. Once again, the Californian Austin Healey members extended a warm welcome. Thank you.
